SSC CGL selection spans multiple stages — Tier 1 and Tier 2 objective papers, and for many posts, the Tier 2 Data Entry Speed Test (DEST). Strong vocabulary and general awareness matter throughout the objective papers, while typing speed and accuracy decide whether you clear the DEST. Practicing all three consistently, not just before the exam, is what separates a comfortable clear from a last-minute scramble.
Typing Test (DEST) Rules
- Duration of the typing test is 15 minutes.
- Candidates must type a given passage in English on a computer using the designated software provided by SSC.
- The required typing speed is generally 8000 key depressions per hour, roughly 2000 key depressions in 15 minutes.
- DEST is qualifying in nature — candidates must meet the minimum speed and accuracy threshold to remain in contention for final selection.
English Vocabulary & General Knowledge
SSC CGL's objective papers repeatedly test the same categories — synonyms, antonyms, idioms, and one-word substitutions in English; polity, history, geography, and science in General Knowledge. Practicing topic-tagged quiz sets helps you spot your weak areas quickly instead of re-reading material you've already mastered.
Use the Typing Test Mock to build exam-day familiarity with the DEST interface and timer, and the English and GK quizzes to sharpen recall on the categories that show up most often — all free, with instant, topic-wise scoring after every attempt.
