Understanding DEST Grading: Full vs. Half Mistakes
Unlike typical online typing tests that grade you purely on character-by-character accuracy, the SSC DEST uses a specialized set of guidelines to evaluate candidates. Mistakes are strictly classified into two categories:
Full Mistakes (1.0 Penalty)
- Omission: Skipping a word, number, or symbol.
- Substitution: Replacing a word with another word.
- Addition: Typing an extra word not present in the passage.
- Spelling Errors: Any spelling typo (letters repeated, omitted, or switched).
- Incomplete Words: Submitting a half-typed word.
Half Mistakes (0.5 Penalty)
- Spacing: Double spaces between words or missing spaces between words.
- Capitalization: Typing uppercase instead of lowercase, or vice versa.
- Punctuation: Missing, extra, or wrong punctuation marks.
- Transposition: Swapping two adjacent words (e.g. "the quick" typed as "quick the").
- Paragraph Indent: Spacing manually instead of using the Tab key.
Paragraph Formatting and the Tab Rule
One of the most common reasons candidates lose marks in the DEST is paragraph indent formatting. The official SSC system requires you to indent every new paragraph using the Tab key.
Using the Spacebar multiple times to create a manual space at the start of a paragraph is counted as a Half Mistake for paragraph formatting. Our simulator intercepts the Tab key inside the text area to let you practice this formatting rule properly.
Do not rush your typing at the beginning of the test. 27 WPM is a highly achievable speed for most candidates. Spend the first 2 minutes finding a steady, rhythmic typing pace. Focus on accuracy first, as backtracking to fix spelling errors and capitalization mismatches eats up more time than typing carefully from the start.
Qualifying Criteria for Different Posts
The qualifying error threshold varies depending on whether the post is classified as a CPT (Computer Proficiency Test) post or a non-CPT post:
- CPT Posts (ASO in CSS/MEA, Excise Inspectors, etc.): The threshold is highly competitive. General category candidates must maintain error rates under 5%, OBC/EWS under 7%, and SC/ST under 10%.
- Non-CPT Posts (Tax Assistants, etc.): The error tolerance is higher. General candidates are allowed up to 20% error, OBC/EWS up to 25%, and SC/ST up to 30%.
